The Maculelê Citizen's of the Future: Community Garden was inspired by the mission of the Maculelê Miami Brazilian Arts Institute to disseminate and celebrate the practice of capoeira, a Brazilian martial-art form with a special focus on promoting healthy and active living and empowering disadvantaged and at-risk youth.
By creating a community garden our two main goals are to (1) Provide an educational space where families can learn about organic gardening and healthy eating and (2) to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to local families who do not have access to fresh produce due to living in a food desert.
This garden will be an opportunity for students to learn about health, gardening and the environment. By growing our own food, we will learn where our food comes from and how to best take care of ourselves in a holistic way.
Macuele Capoeira embodies a lifestyle that loves each other and ourselves. Taking care of our bodies will no doubt in turn improve our capoeira!!
Our academy, as well as our new garden, is located in a food desert. The food made at our garden will be a source of fresh, nutritious food for our volunteers who would otherwise have little access to fresh, affordable food.
